JBL Signature Sound with Bass Radiator
JBL’s patented Bass Radiator technology has been a staple of their speaker designs for decades, and it makes a strong appearance here. This technology is used on larger speakers to create a deep, powerful bass response. On a portable speaker, this isn’t really feasible, so JBL came up with a clever solution to create a similar effect. The Flip 4 has two passive radiators that vibrate the entire inside of the speaker cabinet to create a similar effect. This creates a full, warm bass response that really brings music to life. It’s certainly not the most accurate sound, but it’s definitely something that will get your feet tapping. It’s great for genres like dance music or pop, where the bassline plays a central role. It’s not so great for things like folk or jazz, where a more detailed sound is preferred.
Vibrant Colors with Rugged Fabric Design
At the time of this review, the Flip 4 is available in eight different colors. We received the “Electric Blue” model for review, which is a vibrant blue fabric. The blue color on the speaker actually changes depending on the lighting in the room, which is a cool effect. The fabric used on the Flip 4 is quite rugged, so it’s built to withstand the elements while remaining stylish. It’s also incredibly easy to clean, which is great if you plan on taking this out on the trail. While the fabric is certainly very durable, it’s important to note that it’s not watertight. It won’t stand up to a downpour, so it’s best to keep the Flip 4 away from rain if possible.

This is great news for people who like to get a little messy on occasion, because it means you don’t have to worry about smashing your Bluetooth speaker or headphones when you’re out and about. JBL’s Flip 4 is fully waterproof, so you can take it on any adventure and not have to worry about damaging it. You can even submerge it in up to one meter of water for up to 30 minutes, so it’s great for activities like water sports or beach trips. JBL Lock and Roll™ Wireless Remote Included
This might seem like a pretty silly thing to highlight, but the remote that comes with the Flip 4 is actually really handy. It’s a basic remote that lets you control the volume and play/pause button, but it also doubles as a bottle opener. Now, you don’t really need to pair this remote with the speaker, but it does come with a special mounting hole for the remote. If you put the remote in the mounting hole, it will stay there and can’t be lost. It’s a small feature, but it’s something that makes the overall experience a little better.
JBL Endurance™ Build Quality
There are a few things that stand out about the construction of the Flip 4. First, it’s large for a portable speaker, measuring in at 6.3 x 6.3 x 2.6 inches. It’s not huge, but it is a bit bigger than other travel speakers of this size. This is because of the two passive radiators inside the speaker cabinet that create the warm bass response. It’s also on the heavy side as far as travel speakers go, weighing in at 1.6 pounds. The weight is due to the rugged design and the fact that it can be submerged in water. While it’s a bit on the heavy side, it’s a nice tradeoff for the added durability.
Conclusion
There’s a lot to like about the JBL Flip 4. It’s a stylish, compact speaker that can be taken anywhere, and it has enough volume and bass to keep a party going.
